Public sector website accessibility compliance

THE CHALLENGE

Club Durham’s website gives local sports clubs access to the support, advice and guidance they need to run successfully. As an offshoot of Durham County Council, the site was required to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility standards. This was non-negotiable given the council’s public sector obligations.

Our Approach

We worked closely with Club Durham’s digital team to establish a strong accessibility foundation, one that could scale as the site continued to grow and evolve. Rather than treating accessibility as a one-off checklist, we focused on building practices the team could maintain independently going forward.

What We Delivered

  • Full keyboard accessibility throughout the site
  • High-contrast text overlays for improved readability
  • Detailed image descriptions, with built-in functionality for the Club Durham team to continue adding accurate descriptions as new imagery is uploaded
  • Descriptive link text that clarifies purpose to the user including clear indicators when a link opens in a new window
  • Fully labelled forms with clear instructions to guide users through every field

The Impact

The result is a website that genuinely works for everyone, regardless of ability, while giving the Club Durham team the tools and confidence to keep building accessibly as the site grows.
