Smart! The Future for Mobile Phones
Virtually everyone in the UK between 25 and 34 has a mobile phone with just 1% without a phone. The older generation is not missing out either. Three quarters of 65 -74 year olds have a mobile and half of those over 75.*
The popularity of smartphones is increasing significantly with smartphone sales representing at least half the mobiles sold in the UK – around 7 million smartphones were sold in the first half of 2011 alone, according to research by GfK Retail and Technology UK. Sales can only be expected to increase as prices for smartphones and data plans continuing to drop.
The end of the PC?
By 2014, it is predicted that mobile internet use will overtake desktop internet usage. More than half all local searches are now done from a mobile device. Teenagers who own a smartphone are already tending to ditch their PC completely in favour of their phone. Facebook is the most popular website for all mobile users.
Five a day
The mobile revolution continues with a huge increase in texting. Britons send an average of 5 text messages each day. Figures from Ofcom show that in the UK, up to 129bn texts were sent in 2010. This is an increase of 24% on 2009.
