Child Poverty, Not a Thing of The Past
A quarter of children and young people in North East England and across the UK as a whole 2.8 million, live in poverty. The UK has one of the worst records for child poverty in the industrialised world and has been criticised by the UN for having unacceptable levels.
Children North East and Webb Memorial Trust are jointly hosting a conference at Sage Gateshead on 23 November aimed at highlighting the issues. Speakers include Professor Danny Dorling from Sheffield University who will address Why Inequality Persists.
The focus of the conference will be to collectively find solutions and generate actions to end child poverty.
The conference will also premier a unique exhibition of children and young people’s photographs. Over 1200 have been documenting and recording how they see and experience poverty in 2011.
Adam Robertson, Creative Director at Blumilk says: “Working on the exhibition project for Children North East has really brought home to the Blumilk team how much still needs to be done to eradicate poverty. It is totally unacceptable to us that this situation persists in a rich country like the UK.”
